NEW BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT - Fit 4 One

.iTown recently spoke with Andrea Long, owner and fitness trainer extraordinaire, at her studio on Main Street in Plymouth (behind Backyard Birds).  This writer was also put through the paces on a workout with Andrea - for that story (which we have now recovered from), please visit our Living/Health and Fitness section.

.iTown - How long have you been open?

I signed the lease December 1, 2008 and opened for business on December 15.

Why did you choose downtown Plymouth for your location?

I live in neighboring Canton and I always loved downtown Plymouth. Itís a great place. The people are friendly and there is a true sense of community here. I have lived in many places, including Boston and South Florida and the people of Plymouth have been, by far, the most welcoming.

We at .iTownOnline.com can sympathize with anyone opening a new business during our current economic environment.  How is it going so far?

It is tough out there for people, but itís going okay. I have a steady and loyal client base, and I am working to obtain new clients. As a new business, I am also trying to increase awareness - tthat has been my marketing approach.

What have you done prior to this as preparation for opening your personal training studio?

I have my B.A. in sociology/psychology and I took a lot of exercise science and nutrition courses. I have always been passionate about nutrition and exercise so I decided to get certified (I am a NASM certified trainer). I was working days as a human resources recruiter and personal training at a large well known gym at night. I did really well training, and loved doing it, so I eventually made it my full time job. I also trained many clients in their home that were interested in getting in shape and getting healthy but couldnít afford the $80 an hour price tag that the gym charged for training. Many of my clients suggested that I open up my own gym or studio and one day I finally took their advice wrote a business plan and eventually opened up FIT4ONE. I love what I do and I think that is obvious in every one of my sessions. It is so rewarding to help others achieve their fitness goals.

A lot of people probably struggle to take the first step toward improved health & fitness due to their concern about having someone like you become aware of their current level of fitness.  How can they get over that hurdle?

I understand that many people are inactive and can improve their eating habits - thatís why some of my clients come to me in the first place. Their first visit to me is the first step in the right direction toward better health.  My clientele is very diverse. I have trained male and females from age 16- 68 at all fitness levels; from those who have never worked out to lifetime athletes training for an event. Each program is tailored to the client and their specific goals..

I also know how difficult it is to lose weight and stay healthy. Everyone gets off track sometimes. I gained 80 pounds when I was pregnant with my daughter Elle (sheís 4 now) and it took about 2 years of exercising regularly and eating right to lose the weight.

What is the experience of a typical customer?

To begin with, all of my clients complete 2 days of a food log. I then analyze these and break down the calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat that they are consuming based upon the recommended amount. I also make suggestions if their diet is unbalanced or they arenít consuming enough protein, etc; Most of my clients come to me twice a week and then ideally work out 3 times a week on their own. I provide clients with a full body band workout or a workout on a piece of equipment of their choice - most people have a yoga ball or a step or something lying around their house.  If not these things are inexpensive and an exercise band can be purchased for less than $10. I also have clients who workout regularly but come to me for 5 sessions to learn a new routine that they can perform on their own. Some clients come to me for motivation because if they didnít have their weekly appointments they may not work out or may not work out as intensely. It all depends on the individual clients goals.

As mentioned above, and as detailed in our Health and Fitness section, we can attest to the quality and benefit of a workout session supervised and encouraged by Andrea.  Please read that related article to obtain a first-hand account, or better yet, contact Andrea at Fit4One.  FIT4ONE, 633B Main St, Plymouth; Ph: 248/875.3746, www.fit41.com
