As the linked-to article on NYTimes.com suggests, and as we learn more about the spread of new viruses and disease, it's time to put aside the notion that we prove our mettle by pressing on and working through an illness.
Think about it - your co-workers are increasingly conscious of not wanting to pick up another person's illness, and increasingly do not think you're "taking one for the team" by showing up. It is also all too easy to pass along whatever it is you have - the net result of your one day of reduced productivity while working sick could lead to several days of lost productivity among your co-workers.
