GRUMPY CANTONITE - READER RESPONSE: Where Should I Put My Bike?
Joe S. of Canton writes: To save gas and get more exercise, I have been trying to use my bike on short trips. It is working out OK, but I have been frustrated that the strip centers along Ford Rd. and other places do not provide bike racks, or any good place to park and lock a bike. A trash can or a large cement pillar are usually all that is available. I have even seen a bike locked to the handle of a door on a vacant storefront.
I suppose that the strip centers can't be required to put in bike racks, but with the price of gas, wouldn't it be good business to do so? I think that certain businesses, like a coffee shop or a restaurant, would like having one near their location to get some of the bike-up traffic. And the people that run the centers shouldn't worry about how far a biker would have to walk to get from a rack to all the stores, because we are trying to get exercise anyway.
I would like to see more bike racks! Shopping centers that have them will get more of my business.
.iTown Editor's Note: Joe's gripe will be forwarded to the Canton Downtown Development Authority for their review, and if they so choose, response. A response will posted as an update to this article.
RESPONSE - From the Downtown Development Authority:
Thank you very much for providing the Canton Downtown Development Authority with this information. It is most timely, as the DDA Board has had some recent discussions about this very issue. I will make a point of including Joe's thoughts in the next DDA Board packet for further discussion. The DDA Board may want to contact the shopping center owners with this information and encourage them to consider installing bike racks on their properties. The shopping center at the corner of Palmer and Lilley has a bike rack, but I hardly ever see a bike in it. I like the bike idea, but in my neighborhood you are taking your life in your hands if you try to get around by bike. Canton could do more to make the streets and sidewalks safer for bike use.
